Amahoro Forest Lodge

Location Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
Capacity 12 guests
Camp Type Forest Lodge

Amahoro Forest Lodge sits on the lower slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, where terraced farmland gives way to dense montane forest — home to roughly a third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Eight stone-and-timber suites, each with its own fireplace, look out toward Bisoke and Karisimbi through drifting mist.

Mornings begin early: guests set out with park rangers before dawn for the trek to find a habituated gorilla family, an encounter capped at one hour by park regulation but remembered for a lifetime. Afternoons are unhurried — a walk through the lodge’s organic garden, a massage after the trek’s exertion, or simply a chair by the fire with a view of the volcanoes.

Rwanda’s conservation model, which channels a significant share of park revenue directly to surrounding communities, is on full display here: guides, trackers, and lodge staff are drawn almost entirely from villages within sight of the forest.
